Bromelain Extract

Bromelain is an enzyme from pineapple that makes up half of the protein found in the fruit flesh, and much more than half the protein of the core and stems. Bromelain is proteolytic, meaning it breaks down proteins and has other beneficial active constituents which are well-absorbed. It is widely used for a variety of health conditions such as: reducing inflammation and swelling, preventing lung oedema, slowing clotting, healing wounds, improving antibiotic absorption, treating some infections, treating hay fever, healing damaged tissue and much more.

.

Can Bromelain be used for coughs and respiratory infections?

Yes, Bromelain is a useful support for the respiratory system. Microbes such as bacteria, viruses and fungi can cause infections of the airways that manifest as sore throats, colds, sinusitis, bronchitis or pneumonia. The respiratory system can also suffer from allergies such as asthma, hay fever, etc. These infections and allergies are usually accompanied by inflammation, swelling, mucous production and coughing. For all these problems Bromelain can be used to help alleviate the symptoms.

Mucolytic: Mucous production is one of the most uncomfortable features of respiratory illness and can prolong symptoms. A very helpful action of Bromelain for coughs and respiratory infections is that it thins mucus making it easier to expel. This has been confirmed in cases of tuberculosis infection, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, bronchiectasis, or pulmonary abscess.

Anti-microbial
Scientists found that when Bromelain and antibiotics were given together to people with pneumonia or bronchitis, the therapy was more effective than just antibiotics alone. This synergism also reduced antibiotic side effects. For people with sinus infections, symptoms and quality of life also improved, while there were no adverse effects.

Anti-inflammatory
Bromelain reduces inflammation. For example in respiratory allergies and asthma it reduces the inflammatory response and allergic sensitization of airways.

Sore throat:  Drinking pineapple juice significantly reduces the soreness and redness in the throat.

Is Bromelain safe?

Yes, Bromelain has been shown to be safe and effective as a supplement.

How can you enhance the effectiveness of Bromelain?

There are ways you can make Bromelain work better by adding other ingredients found in foods. Bromelain synergizes with other anti-inflammatories such as curcumin from turmeric, and the anti-oxidant quercetin from kale, blueberries and dark grapes. In the case of sinusitis, early research indicates that if you take decongestants and antihistamines with your Bromelain it may reduce swelling in the nose. Finally, take your Bromelain without food for best effect.

Are there any cautions in using Bromelain?

Although Bromelain is very safe, it may interact with a few things that you need to talk about with your doctor. This includes: allergy to pineapples and unrelated foods, pregnancy and breast-feeding, planned surgery, or taking blood thinning medications and antibiotics. Some people may experience some side effects such as stomach upsets, fast heartbeat and heavy menstrual periods.

In general Bromelain is a great supplement and will benefit your health in many ways.
